- Thought I'd try a cheap 28.8 V.34 modem.
- Went to Fry's, nearby. Bought their OEM, no-name, generic $99 internal modem.
- Defective - hang-up immediately after doing equalization handshake.
- Exchanged. #2 connected, but speaker doesn't work.
- Exchanged. #3 works OK.
-
- Dialing local Internet Service Provider (with SUPRA modems), and about 6 misc. other calls,
- I find that the cheap modem connects at 26.4 about 90% of the time. Otherwise, it is at
- 26.4. Seems to work OK.
-
- It uses the Rockwell chipset. Looking at the photo on the box, and comparing that to the
- photo on the BEST DATA modem, I see they are identical. Maybe a newer chipset in the
- branded one. But, hey, it's $159.
-
- Haven't tried FAX mode.
-
- For what it's worth!
