  11. Thought I'd try a cheap 28.8 V.34 modem.
  12. Went to Fry's, nearby. Bought their OEM, no-name, generic $99 internal modem.
  13. Defective - hang-up immediately after doing equalization handshake.
  14. Exchanged. #2 connected, but speaker doesn't work. 
  15. Exchanged. #3 works OK.

  17. Dialing local Internet Service Provider (with SUPRA modems), and about 6 misc. other calls,
  18. I find that the cheap modem connects at 26.4 about 90% of the time. Otherwise, it is at
  19. 26.4. Seems to work OK.

  21. It uses the Rockwell chipset. Looking at the photo on the box, and comparing that to the
  22. photo on the BEST DATA modem, I see they are identical. Maybe a newer chipset in the
  23. branded one. But, hey, it's $159.
